Okay, so here's the skinny. This was actually one of the first M/M stories I ever read, so it will always have a special place in my heart. I loved the whirlwind romance between nineteen year old Tristan and twenty-seven year old Michael.That being said, sometimes it's a good idea not to go back and revisit some stories.
The intensity of the insta-love was jarring to me with this read. The same points I loved when I first read this years ago now make me cringe a little.
But I still love the sex scenes, and the terrific family dynamics, and how much Michael and Tristan love each other and work to be with one another.
The narration itself was good, except I really didn't like the voice used for Tristan. Tristan is described as a sort of punk-skater-boi with long hair who has been banging chicks left and right before he comes to terms with his homosexuality and the voice Tobias Silversmith uses is...delicate. Almost feminine. It didn't match up with my idea for how the character would sound and that took me a long while to stop trying to force my expectation of the voice and just enjoy the narration.
I really liked Silversmith's range, tone, and emotion. Once I stopped trying to backseat-narrate I really enjoyed it.
If you like a super-sweet insta-love romance with an age difference between lovers and some really hot sexy times you should check it out.

I put off reading this for a long time, mostly because of the previous cover! The new one is a little better. Anyway, this is a great story. It did start a little strange and some things, like sex and the I-love-you's seemed rushed. But in spite of his age, Tristan was actually a mature young man in many ways. Michael was a man of principals and firm in his beliefs. They did come to a crisis point but were ultimately able to face their differences and actually discuss them, not just allow them to take over and fester. Granted, they had some help from strong supporting characters and accepting families. It was interesting to see the differences from 2007, when it was written, and how at least some things have changed for the better.
The cool thing about Goodreads is the various forums and book clubs. I purchased "Crossing Boarders" because it was a book assigned to read from the bookclub. Wow! I loved it and I loved that I went and bought it. I thought this was an amazing story.
First all, very cool book title.
Great story about Tristan coming to terms that girls dont really rock his world and he takes a chance to discover and persue his desire for men. Tristan's character was just so darn lovable. I LOVED his family and I loved how close he was to his mom. He was a stellar son and I would be totally proud to have a son as thoughtful as him.
Michael AKA "Officer Helmet" was another awesome character who was already aware that he was gay and he too has a wonderful relationship with his mom. I have to say, the whole family theme that is peppered throughout the book was such a draw. Actually my FAVORITE scene was the Thanksgiving Day dinner. I laughed out loud so many times. I finished the book last night but I am still thinking about the dinner today. *smiles*
I just adored how Tristan and Michael came together as a couple and I really enjoyed how they really started to solidify their relationship. I was rooting for them so badly. I just wanted to hug them both and wish them all the best!
There was romance, love, tattoo'n and great sex scenes. I loved the bath scenes as well. *sigh*
I don't want to give away too much of the story or add spoilers because I would just recommend this book on the basis that I just loved it and I am going to for sure gonna buy more books by Z.A. Maxfield. It was a great journey and just a simply awesome read.
I do have to add that the one thing I didn't like was the constant reference to Tristan being a "boy". I am not sure if he was 20 or 19 but I didn't like that boy reference. That is about the only thing I would change. Also regarding the cover, I picture the men too look way different.
maybe 2.5 stars. This just felt really really awkward to me in the first half. Like, super awkward. Insta-love. Weirdness. Very repetitive, especially to words spoken during sex. Sparky is a terrible nickname for your lover. There were some cute things. I'm glad there were some realistic issues and an attempt to work that out.
This author has many other books I would recommend though, especially Drawn Together. Really liked that.
What a lovely coming of age story. I really enjoyed both of these men, but Tristan (Sparky) was so much fun. Watching him angst over becoming an adult and what that means for him, his family, and Michael, made me smile and even sniffle a little.
There's plenty of sex in this book, but for the most part it felt integral to the story of a young man finding himself and coming to terms with his sexuality. If you're looking for lots of action and artificial angst, you won't find it here. This is slice of life meets coming of age in a relatively low key package.
The ending wasn't my favorite, only because the fast-forward to the future meant the reader misses out on what would have gone on between the two MCs as they come to a very important decision affecting their future. But other than that niggle, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
This book had things I loved, and one thing in particular that I didn't. It was a fun story, with a bossy, toppy, skateboarding twink and an overprotective, sometimes submissive cop. Their interactions with each other and their families were fun to read. There was a bit of angst/drama towards the end, but not enough to put me off the story. I enjoyed the epilogue, since otherwise it would have felt more like a HFN ending.
And now, my pet peeve with this book - rapid-fire perspective changes without warning. It really took me out of the story sometimes, to have two or so paragraphs from Michael's viewpoint, and then switch suddenly to Tristan's. I realize this is an early book of the author's, so I'm not letting it affect my rating too much, but it was still a bit off-putting.
